History

New Albany was founded in 1813 by three brothers from Connecticut - Joel, Abner, and Nathaniel Scribner. They purchased the land from Colonel John Paul and named the area after the capital of New York, Albany, where they had once lived.

In 1814, New Albany became the county seat of Floyd County. The Scribner brothers laid out wide streets in a grid pattern and began selling lots for development. By 1820, over 250 lots had been sold. Early industries included shipbuilding, pork packing, and flour milling.

During the Civil War, New Albany served as a hub for troop organization and training. The city continued to grow rapidly following the war. River traffic, manufacturing, and railroads contributed to prosperity and expansion. New Albany became one of the largest cities in Indiana in the late 19th century.
