Mishawaka is a city in St. Joseph County, Indiana, United States, on the St. Joseph River. Its population was 48,252 as of the 2010 census. Located about 10 miles south of South Bend, Indiana, and 100 miles east of Chicago, Mishawaka is known as the "Princess City."

Mishawaka's recorded history began with the discovery of bog iron deposits at the beginning of the 1830s. Settlers arriving to mine the deposits founded the town of St. Joseph Iron Works in 1831. Within a few years, the town had a blast furnace, a general store, a tavern, and about 200 residents. Business prospered during the 1840s and 1850s as population swelled. A railroad junction was formed in Mishawaka in 1858.

Mishawaka grew through both industry and agriculture. In the late 19th century, Mishawaka became known as the "Peppermint Capital of the World" owing to its prolific peppermint crops. From 1906 to 1915, Mishawaka was the manufacturing home of the luxurious American Simplex motor car. Four American Simplex autos entered the first Indianapolis 500 in 1911. One Simplex crashed, killing the mechanic riding with the driver, while the other Mishawaka cars finished sixth, eighth, and twentieth.

Ball-Band made rubber garments and was hit by a general strike in 1931. The city attracted workers and businesses from outlying farms during the Great Depression. Some manufacturers relocated to Mishawaka from St. Joseph, adjacent to the south, as universities in South Bend grew. In 1940, actor Pat O'Brien appeared at Mishawaka's annual Independence Day “Furlane training.” The July festival included a palio horse race and pageant. In 1941, Vernors ginger ale opened a bottling plant in the city.

In the late 20th century, Mishawaka grew rapidly as suburban housing extended north and south from the city center. The Battell Park Historic District represents one of the city's oldest residential neighborhoods. The city continues to develop retail and office space, concentrated around River Point. Target constructed their first food distribution center in Mishawaka in the early 2000s.

Population

The population of Mishawaka was 48,252 at the 2010 census. The city is the second largest in the South Bend–Mishawaka metropolitan area. Because of Mishawaka's more centralized location, its population has risen steadily while unincorporated suburban growth has lowered population in adjacent towns like Osceola. The city's population density was 2,884.4 inhabitants per square mile (1,114.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 90.0% White, 5.5% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.0% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.8% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.0% of the population.

There were 20,912 households, of which 29.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 44.5% were married couples living together, 13.9% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.9% had a male householder with no wife present, and 36.7% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.90.

The median age in the city was 37.2 years. 23.1% of residents were under the age of 18; 9% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 27.6% were from 25 to 44; 25.8% were from 45 to 64; and 14.4% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 48.4% male and 51.6% female.

Economy

Mishawaka’s earliest industry was agriculture based on bog iron ore found in the area. The 1835 settlement became known as “St. Joseph Iron Works.” But intensive farming caused a decline in bog ore. In the late 19th century, Mishawaka became known as the “Peppermint Capital of the World,” with some 1,000 acres (400 ha) in and around the city devoted to mint production. Processors shipped clean mint to candymakers in the East.

Today, the city's economy is based on a mix of industry including manufacturing, commerce, finance, healthcare, real estate, trade, transportation and utilities, and construction. Mishawaka is home to several corporations including AMC Theatres, Anthropologie, Chester, Crowe Horwarth, First Bank of Indiana, Honeywell Aerospace, Inova Payroll, Johns Manville, Molded Labels, Oxygen Machine Company, Premium Supply, Princess House, Uniroyal Goodrich, and VanderHyden BarberMoss. The University Park Mall is a large regional shopping mall located just northwest of the city limits in Mishawaka.
