Merrillville has grown significantly in recent decades. In 1970, the population was recorded at 14,840. By 1980 it had grown to 25,906, and in 1990 it was 28,717. Merrillville saw its largest growth spurt between 1970 and 1990, more than doubling in size over those two decades.

History

The earliest settlers to the Merrillville area arrived in 1834 and were from Connecticut and Vermont. Early settler Dexter Spalding is credited with naming the town after the Merrill family, who ran a wayside inn and were the first postmasters in the area. Merrillville was incorporated as a town in 1971.
