Knightstown is a town in Wayne Township, Henry County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,182 at the 2010 census. Knightstown promotes itself as the "Hoosier Gym" town because of the old gymnasium located at Knightstown High School, made famous by the hit movie Hoosiers. Knightstown is also known for the nickname "Town of the Knights".

Population

According to the 2010 census, Knightstown had a population of 2,182 people. The racial makeup of the town was 97.7% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race were 1.6% of the population.

History

Knightstown was laid out in 1827. It took its name from Dr. William Knight, its founder. Knightstown became the county seat in 1838.

The Knightstown post office has been in operation since 1828 [1]. The town's early growth was tied to its position along the National Road.

By the early 1900s, Knightstown had become associated with the Ku Klux Klan. A significant number of Knightstown men joined the KKK.

In the 1920s, Knightstown became known in Indiana basketball circles as the home of a large fieldhouse - the Hoosier Gym. It was home to the Knightstown Panthers of the Indiana High School Boys Basketball Tournament fame in the movie Hoosiers. [1]
