Jeffersonville is a city located in southern Indiana along the Ohio River. As of the 2020 census, the population of Jeffersonville was 49,085, making it the 10th largest city in Indiana. Jeffersonville is the county seat of Clark County and sits directly across from Louisville, Kentucky.

History

Jeffersonville has a long history dating back to the late 1700s when the land was used as a campsite by Clark's militia during the Northwest Indian War. The city was officially established in 1802 and named after Thomas Jefferson. It served as a supply depot during the Civil War and was briefly claimed as the capital of Indiana thanks to political maneuvering. Today, much of Jeffersonville's historic downtown and homes are part of the Jeffersonville Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

According to the 2020 census, Jeffersonville had a population of 49,085 residents, making it the 10th largest city in Indiana. The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 11.5% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.1% from other races, and 3.7% from two or more races. Additionally, 10.5% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
