Nestled along the Ohio River in the southeastern corner of Dearborn County, Harrison, Indiana is a charming small town with a population of around 11,000 residents. Though small in size, Harrison has plenty to offer residents and visitors alike with its rich history, cultural attractions, business opportunities and excellent school system.

History of Harrison

The town of Harrison was founded in 1811 by General William Henry Harrison, who later became the 9th President of the United States. He purchased 160 acres of land and established the town, naming it after himself. The town was officially incorporated in 1837.

Due to its prime location along the Ohio River, Harrison thrived as a commercial and manufacturing hub in the 19th century. River access enabled transport of people and goods, while the river itself provided water power for mills. Major industries included pork processing, flour milling and whiskey production.

Like many river towns, Harrison suffered a decline in the early 20th century as transportation shifted from river to railroad. But the spirit and charm of this historic small town remains intact today.
