Franklin is a city in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 24,850 at the 2020 census. Franklin is the county seat of Johnson County.

History

Franklin was platted in 1823. It was named after Benjamin Franklin.[1]

The Franklin Courthouse Square Historic District, Franklin Carnegie Library, Johnson County Courthouse, and Old City Hall are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.[2]

Geography and Climate

Franklin is located at 39°29′35′′N 86°3′14′′W (39.493043, -86.053792).[1]

According to the 2010 census, Franklin has a total area of 8.344 square miles (21.61 km2), of which 8.19 square miles (21.21 km2) (or 98.18%) is land and 0.154 square miles (0.4 km2) (or 1.82%) is water.[1]

The climate in Franklin is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Franklin has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.[3]

Demographics

As of the 2020 US Census, there were 24,850 people, 9,696 households, and 6,389 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,034 inhabitants per square mile (1,171/km2). There were 10,596 housing units at an average density of 1,292 per square mile (498.8/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 86.7% White, 1.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.0% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 8.3% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.9% of the population.[4]

Government

Franklin has a mayor-council form of government. The mayor is elected in citywide vote. The city council consists of seven members. Five are elected from individual districts. Two are elected at-large.[2]

The current mayor of Franklin is Steve Barnett. The city council members are: Brandie Eckerle (District 1); Joe Ault (District 2); Brian Quigley (District 3); Missy Riggs (District 4); Tim Kelty (District 5); Tony Chongrui Zhang (At-large); Steve Fink (At-large).[5]

Attractions and Landmarks

Franklin College

Franklin College is a private liberal arts college in Franklin. Founded in 1834, it is the first college founded after Indiana statehood. Notable alumni include Nobel Prize recipient Elwood Haynes.[6]

Johnson County Courthouse

The Johnson County Courthouse is located in downtown Franklin. It was built in 1881 and is an example of Second Empire architecture. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.[7]

Artcraft Theatre

The Artcraft Theatre is a historic movie theatre located in downtown Franklin. Originally opened in 1922, it was renovated and reopened in 2014. It shows classic films and hosts live entertainment.[8]

Local Sports

The Franklin Community Grizzly Cubs compete in the Mid-State Conference in IHSAA-sanctioned athletics. Popular sports include football, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, tennis, golf, and more. Home games take place at Franklin Community High School.[15]

The Daily Journal is the local newspaper serving Franklin and Johnson County. The paper was established in 1963 through the merger of the Franklin Evening Star and Daily Tribune.[16]
