History of Fishers

Fishers has its roots as a farming community that dates back to the early 19th century. The area that became Fishers was originally inhabited by the Miami and Lenape Native American tribes. White settlement of the area began around 1820. In the 1870s, a vital railroad line connecting Indianapolis and Louisville, Kentucky was constructed through what is now downtown Fishers, spurring growth and development. The town was named after William Fishers, an early settler who owned a general store and grain mill in the area.

For most of the 20th century, Fishers remained a small agricultural town with a population of just over 1,000 residents. Things began to change in the 1970s as Indianapolis suburban growth spread north, and Fishers was incorporated as a town in 1987. With its strategic location along Interstate 69 between Indianapolis and Noblesville, Fishers experienced rapid population growth. Various corporations located their headquarters in Fishers, including Thomson Consumer Electronics, Endress+Hauser, and Hotel Tango Artisan Distillery. The population climbed to over 37,000 by 2000 and nearly 90,000 as of 2020. Today, Fishers ranks as the 9th largest city in Indiana.
