History of Fairfield

Fairfield was platted in 1831 by James Andrew Wallace shortly after the creation of Tippecanoe County. It was named after Fairfield County, Ohio, where many of the early settlers migrated from. The town was incorporated in 1860. In its early days, Fairfield was a bustling pioneer town along the historic Michigan Road that connected Madison, Indiana to Michigan City. Stores, shops, hotels and taverns catered to settlers heading west. Today, several historic buildings from the 19th century still stand around Courthouse Square and along Main Street.

By the late 1800s, Fairfield was a thriving agricultural community with railroad access via the Louisville, New Albany and Chicago Railway. The economy was based around farming, livestock and grain production. Over the next decades, the population grew to over 1,000 residents. Fairfield State Bank opened in 1910, providing financial services still to this day.

The early and mid-20th century saw improvements to local roads connecting Fairfield to Lafayette and surrounding areas which helped sustain its economy. Community pride led to projects like the town clock installed downtown in 1972. While the population has hovered around 300 for the past fifty years, Fairfield continues to embrace its small town roots while evolving for modern times.
