History

The area around present-day Elkhart was inhabited by the Potawatomi tribe in the 18th century. White settlers began arriving in the 1830s, clearing land for farming. Elkhart itself was founded in 1831 and named after the Elkhart River. It was incorporated as a town in 1851 and as a city in 1868.
