Decatur is a city in Adams County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,405 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of and the largest city in Adams County. Located along the St. Mary's River, Decatur is known as the "City of Churches" due to the large number of religious institutions located there.

History

Decatur was platted in 1836. It was named for Commodore Stephen Decatur, Jr., a naval officer in the First Barbary War and the War of 1812. Decatur was incorporated as a town in 1849 and as a city in 1869.
