History of Clay

The town of Clay was founded in 1854. It was likely named after statesman Henry Clay, who was known as "The Great Compromiser" for his role in delaying the Civil War. Clay County itself was formed in 1825 and named after Henry Clay.

Some of the earliest settlers to the area were Quaker families who came from North Carolina in the 1820s. The Quakers established several meeting houses in the county and practiced abolitionism. They operated stations on the Underground Railroad to help escaping slaves find freedom.

The economy of Clay was historically based around agriculture, with corn and livestock being important products. The Monon Railroad was built through Clay in the late 19th century, which enabled the transportation of goods to markets and facilitated growth. The discovery of gas wells in the 1880s also stimulated the local economy for a period.
