Calumet is a city in Lake County, Indiana, United States. The population was 524 at the 2010 census. Calumet was established in 1889, consolidated from the adjacent towns of Clarksburg and Depew. The city thrived as a steel mill town for most of the 20th century but has faced a declining population since 1970.

History of Calumet

The Calumet region was first settled in the early 19th century as the northern part of Indiana was being developed. Clarksburg and Depew were founded as separate municipalities in the 1860s and 1870s around steel mills developing near Lake Michigan.

The two towns consolidated under the name Calumet in 1889. Calumet grew rapidly as U.S. Steel and other companies expanded steel production along Lake Michigan. Easy access to the lake and railroad transportation made the Calumet area ideal for steel mills.

Geography and Climate

Calumet is located at 41°39′47′′N 87°32′16′′W. According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 2.246 square miles, of which 0.015 square miles is water.

Calumet has a humid continental climate, experiencing cold, snowy winters and hot, humid summers. The average high in July is 84°F and the average low in January is 18°F. Calumet gets about 36 inches of precipitation per year on average.

Demographics

As of the 2010 Census, there were 524 people, 259 households, and 124 families residing in the city. The population density was 233.4 inhabitants per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 92.4% White, 2.7% African American, 1.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 1.5% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races.

Of the 259 households, 21.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 30.5% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 53.3% were non-families. 46.3% of households were made up of individuals and 24.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.02 and the average family size was 2.88.

The city's age distribution was 22.5% under 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 27.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% 65 or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 91.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $25,625 and the median family income was $35,000. The per capita income was $13,951. About 22.4% of families and 27.2% of individuals were below the poverty line.

Calumet Fisheries

One of Calumet's most iconic landmarks is Calumet Fisheries, a seafood restaurant on the banks of the Grand Calumet River. Founded in 1948, Calumet Fisheries is famous for its smoked fish, fried shrimp, and other seafood dishes. They smoke their fish the old-fashioned way using a natural hardwood fire. The restaurant exterior is instantly recognizable with its blue paint and fish painted on the side of the building.

Pullman National Monument

The Pullman National Monument preserves the history of the industrial town founded by railroad car manufacturer George Pullman in the 1880s.
