History

The area was inhabited for thousands of years by various cultures of indigenous peoples. In the 17th century, the Delaware, Miami and Potawatomi inhabited this area. A French trading post was established near the present day site of Anderson in the 1770s.

Anderson was founded in 1827 by John and Sarah Berry as Berrytown. The town was platted and recorded in 1828 by John Berry. In 1829, the name was changed to Anderson based on the recommendation of William Conner who thought the town should be named after Chief William Anderson. Anderson was incorporated as a town in 1838.

When Madison County was created in 1836, Anderson became the county seat. The rapid growth in Anderson led to it becoming incorporated as a city in 1866. The historic Madison County courthouse was built in 1909.

Anderson grew as an industrial city with several automobile factories like Delco Remy, Guide Lamp, and the Fisher Body Division of General Motors opening plants in the city. This earned Anderson the nickname "Little Detroit". The city saw rapid growth through the 1920s. During the Great Depression and World War II, manufacturing continued to thrive in the city.

In 1970, Anderson was severely impacted by an F4 tornado that caused heavy damage to the downtown area. The city was rebuilt but many residents moved to the suburbs. The population declined until the 1990s when it began to stabilize.

Over the years, Anderson has struggled with population decline and loss of jobs due to deindustrialization. However, it remains the economic hub of Madison County.
