History

Adams was founded in 1836 and named after John Quincy Adams, the 6th President of the United States. The city was incorporated in 1848. Early settlers were attracted to the area due to the fertile farmland and proximity to the Wabash River. Adams quickly became an agricultural hub, producing corn, wheat, and livestock. The economy diversified in the late 19th century with the discovery of natural gas and oil deposits in the area. Major employers today include manufacturing, healthcare, retail, and agriculture.
