Wheeling is a village located in Cook County in the U.S. state of Illinois. As of the 2020 census, the population of Wheeling was 38,479, making it one of the larger suburbs of Chicago. Wheeling has a rich history dating back to the 19th century when it started as a farming community. Today, it is home to diverse residential neighborhoods and a thriving business district. History

The first settlers arrived in the Wheeling area in the 1830s. Many of the early residents were German immigrants seeking cheap and fertile farmland. The town was originally named Chewsville after Chew family who owned a tavern and barn at the center of the settlement. In 1894, the town was incorporated and renamed Wheeling in honor of Wheeling, West Virginia.

Wheeling grew slowly over the decades, remaining an agricultural village. However, after World War II, Wheeling began to rapidly suburbanize as Chicago's population expanded outward. Large tracts of farmland were sold and developed into housing subdivisions. The population boomed from around 1,000 in 1950 to over 35,000 by 2000. [1]

Wheeling is located at 42°7′47′′N 87°56′29′′W in northeastern Cook County. It is situated approximately 26 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. Wheeling has a humid continental climate, characterized by large seasonal temperature variations. Summers are warm and humid, and winters are cold. The hottest month is July, with an average high of 84°F. January is the coldest month, with an average low of 15°F. Wheeling receives about 36 inches of precipitation annually, with the wettest months being May, June, July, and August.
