Waukegan is a city located in Lake County, Illinois, United States. With a population of 87,901 as of the 2020 census, Waukegan is the ninth largest city in Illinois. It is the county seat of Lake County and located approximately 35 miles north of downtown Chicago.

History

The area that became Waukegan was first inhabited by the Potawatomi tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the early 1800s, and the community was incorporated as "Little Fort" in 1849. The name was changed to Waukegan in 1849. Waukegan's location on the western shores of Lake Michigan made it an important industrial hub in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
