Warren is a city located in Jo Daviess County in the U.S. state of Illinois. According to the Wikipedia page for Warren, the population was 1,560 at the 2020 census. Warren is the county seat of Jo Daviess County.

History

Warren was founded in 1835 by Daniel Whitney and originally named Derby. In 1845, the name was changed to Warren in honor of a pioneer settler named Julius Warren. Julius Warren built the first home in the area in 1828. The first public building in Warren was the Presbyterian Church which was built in 1838.

Warren Historic Commercial District

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Warren's downtown historic commercial district runs along Main Street. The district contains well-preserved 19th century brick commercial buildings. Some of the historic buildings include the Warren Depot which was built in 1854, the Warren City Hall which was built in 1888, and the Jo Daviess County Courthouse built in 1896.

Apple River Fort State Historic Site

Located at 311 E Myrtle St, Elizabeth, IL 61028, this historic fort was built in 1832 during the Black Hawk War to protect early settlers. Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the fort's barracks, blockhouses, powder magazine and granary.
