Troy is a city located in Madison County in the Metro East region of Illinois. As of the 2020 census, Troy had a population of 9,888 residents, making it the 87th most populous city in Illinois.

History

Troy was first settled in 1818 by immigrants from Kentucky and other southern states. The city was originally known as McKee's Settlement. In 1825, the name was changed to Troy after residents held a meeting to choose a new name. According to local legend, the city was named after ancient Troy due to Helen McKee's beauty. Helen was the young bride of one of the city's first settlers.

Troy was officially incorporated as a village in 1839. The first mayor of Troy was William McKee. In 1881, Troy transitioned from a village to a city. The city continued to grow in population and economic prosperity throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Geography and Population

Troy is located at 38°45′47′′N 89°53′37′′W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.49 square miles, all land.

As of the 2020 census, Troy had a population of 9,888 people. The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.6% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 0.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race made up 1.5% of the population.

There were 3,964 households and 2,601 families living in the city. The population density was 1,175.1 people per square mile. There were 4,179 housing units at an average density of 495.8 per square mile.
