Springfield is the capital of the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Sangamon County. As of 2021, the city's population was 115,807, making it the sixth-most populous city in Illinois. Springfield is nicknamed the "Flower City" and often referred to as the "Land of Lincoln" due to it being the hometown of Abraham Lincoln as well as the place where he is buried and where his presidential library and museum are located.

History

Springfield was first settled by European Americans in the late 1810s. It was incorporated in 1832 and became Illinois' state capital in 1837. The city was at the center of the Young America movement in the 1840s and is known as the site of the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858 which helped launch Lincoln's national political career. Lincoln lived in Springfield from 1837 until 1861 when he left for the White House. His tomb and presidential library are located here today which draw many tourists.

Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum contains the world's largest collection of artifacts and documents related to Lincoln's life and presidency. Highlights include copies of the Gettysburg Address and Emancipation Proclamation. The museum uses high-tech exhibits and recreations to tell the story of Lincoln's time in office during the Civil War.

Lincoln Home National Historic Site

Lincoln's home in Springfield from 1844 to 1861 has been preserved and restored to look as it would have during Lincoln's residency. Rangers provide tours of the home and neighborhood where Lincoln began his political career.

Lincoln's Tomb

After his assassination in 1865, Lincoln's body was returned to Springfield where he was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery. His impressive tomb is marked by an 117-foot tall obelisk.

Old State Capitol
