The city has a long history as a transportation hub, located along the Mississippi River near St. Louis. It was once an important stop on the route of stagecoaches and riverboats.

During the early 1900s, St. Clair was home to Evangeline Creamery, which was one of the largest creameries in Illinois at the time. The city was also home to the St. Clair County Sanitarium, the first county tuberculosis sanitarium in Illinois.
