Romeoville is a village located primarily in Will County, Illinois, with a small section in DuPage County. As of the 2020 census, Romeoville had a population of 39,680, making it one of the largest villages in Illinois. Originally called Romeo, the village was renamed Romeoville in 1924.

History

The history of Romeoville dates back to the 1820s when a settler named Seymour Kellogg built a cabin along the DuPage River. Other settlers followed, many traveling west from New York. In 1835, Hiram Walker built a tavern along the Chicago to Ottawa Stagecoach line, which spurred further development. The village was platted in 1852 under the name Romeo. It was incorporated as a village in 1896.

Over the years, Romeoville grew as an agricultural community. After World War II, the village saw suburban residential and industrial development. The construction of interstate highways, new schools, parks, and municipal services supported rapid population growth starting in the 1960s. Romeoville has since become a suburb of Chicago with a diverse economic base.
