History

Rockford was first settled in the 1830s along the Rock River. It was officially incorporated as a city in 1852. Rockford's early growth was fueled by the establishment of rail connections in the 1850s, making it a regional transportation hub. Further growth occurred with the rise of manufacturing in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Major employers included Ingersoll Machine Works, Nelson Knitting Company, Rockford Mitten and Hosiery Company, and Rockford Watch Company.

As of the 2020 census, Rockford had a population of 147,051 residents, making it the third largest city in Illinois outside of the Chicago metropolitan area. The racial makeup of the city is 65.1% White, 21.7% Black or African American, 2.5% Asian, 0.5% Native American, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 6.2% from other races, and 3.9% from two or more races. 19.4% of the population is Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Rockford saw its peak population in the 1960 census when it had over 130,000 residents. The city's population declined in the late 20th century due to people moving to surrounding suburban areas. In recent years, Rockford has started to see population growth again through revitalization efforts in its downtown area.
