Quincy was founded in 1825 by John Wood. Wood purchased the land from veteran Kentuckian John Wood and named the new town after newly elected President John Quincy Adams. Quincy was designated as the county seat of Adams County shortly after it was founded.

The city quickly grew as a shipping and transportation hub due to its prime location along the Mississippi River. Steamboats became a major source of transportation and commerce. Villa Kathrine
