History of Palatine

The area that is now Palatine was first settled in the early 1800s by European immigrants. One of the first settlers was Matthew Laflin, who built a cabin and founded a rural community in the area in 1835. Other early settlers engaged in farming, raising livestock, and operating businesses along what is now Northwest Highway.

The Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railroad was built through the area in the 1850s, leading to Palatine's establishment and early growth as a railroad town. The village of Palatine was incorporated on February 14, 1866. The name "Palatine" refers to the Palatinate region of Germany where many early settlers originated from.

Palatine continued to grow as a residential and commercial suburb throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s. It experienced rapid suburban expansion after World War II, with its population nearly tripling between 1950 and 1980. Major civic improvements and suburban development took place during these decades.
