Niles is a village located in Cook County, Illinois. As of the 2020 census, the population of Niles was 29,717. Niles is located approximately 16 miles northwest of downtown Chicago.

History

The history of Niles dates back to the 19th century when several settlers arrived in the area in the 1820s. The first settler was Hezekiah Berge who established a homestead near the current intersection of Milwaukee and Touhy Avenues. Other notable early settlers were Erastus Crosby and William Howard. The town was originally known as Niles Center but later shortened to Niles.

The town saw growth when Dutch farmers arrived in the area in the 1840s. Niles was incorporated as a village in 1899 as its population continued to expand. The village had various names over the years such as Niles Center and Yoemans until it officially became Niles in 1924.

Niles has historically had a large Polish immigrant population dating back to the late 19th century. Polish immigrants were attracted to good farmland in the area and job opportunities. Evidence of Niles' Polish roots can still be seen today in the Polish Museum of America, Polish churches, and annual Polish events.

Niles is located at 42°1′39′′N 87°48′56′′W. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 5.85 square miles, all land.

As of the 2020 census, there were 29,717 people living in Niles. The racial makeup of the village was 74.4% White, 5.5% African American, 0.2% Native American, 15.2% Asian, 2.5% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race made up 9.0% of the population.
