History

The Village of Moraine was incorporated in February 1959. However, the area had been settled much earlier. In the 1830s, German immigrant Adam Schaumburg established a claim on land near the current village and built a log cabin. Other German immigrants soon joined Schaumburg and founded the community of Schaumburg Center. In 1850, a post office was established in the community with the name of Meacham's Grove. The postal name would eventually change to Prospect Park before becoming Moraine.

The name Moraine comes from the moraine geological formation that runs through the area. A moraine is a deposit of rocks, sand, and debris left by a retreating glacier. The Lake Border morainic system left its mark on the landscape of Moraine and the surrounding communities.

In the late 1950s, developper Sam Cassaretto purchased 400 acres of land just outside Prospect Park. He planned a suburban community called Moraine on the Lake. The first model homes were built in 1959. With Cassaretto's development and the construction of the Northwest Tollway through the area, Moraine experienced significant suburban growth in the 1960s and 1970s.

Today, Moraine continues to be a bedroom community providing suburban housing for commuters to Chicago and other nearby employment centers.
