History of Lyons

The Village of Lyons website provides an overview of the history of Lyons. The area was first settled in 1833 and was originally known as "Indian Trading Point" since it was at the junction of Trails between Chicago and Ottawa. The Illinois and Michigan Canal was built through the area in 1848, bringing more settlers. In 1888, Lyons was incorporated as a village.

Lyons' Water Tower

One of the most iconic landmarks in Lyons is the Lyons Water Tower located near the intersection of Joliet Ave and 47th St. The water tower was constructed in 1889 and held 250,000 gallons of water. It was registered on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Grand Illinois Trail

Lyons is home to a segment of the Grand Illinois Trail, which is planned to eventually span roughly 500 miles across northern Illinois. In Lyons, the trail runs along the Illinois & Michigan Canal towpath. The scenic trail is popular with hikers and bicyclists.
