Lombard, Illinois is a village in DuPage County located about 20 miles west of downtown Chicago. With a population of over 43,000 as of 2020, it is one of the larger suburbs in the Chicago metropolitan area.

History

Lombard was founded in 1869 by Josiah Lombard. It was originally named Babcock's Grove after early settler Ralph Babcock. The name was changed to Lombard in honor of Josiah Lombard who donated land for the train station in exchange for the town being named after him. Lombard was incorporated as a village in 1869.

Lombard experienced growth when the Chicago Aurora and Elgin Railroad came through in 1902. Additional growth occurred after World War II when large tracts of land were developed into suburban housing. The population grew rapidly in the 1950s and 1960s.

As of the 2020 census, Lombard had a population of 43,165 people. This makes it the 101st largest city in Illinois by population. The racial makeup of Lombard is 78.7% White, 5.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 11.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.1% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race make up 8.4% of the population.

Historically, Lombard has been home to many blue collar manufacturing jobs. Major employers included the Sheldon Manufacturing Company which made shelving and office furniture. Over time, manufacturing jobs declined and the village economy transitioned to service, healthcare, education, and retail jobs.

Landmarks and Attractions

Lilacia Park

One of the most famous attractions in Lombard is Lilacia Park. This free public park features over 1,000 lilac bushes and 150 varieties of lilacs. The lilacs are at peak bloom for 2-3 weeks in late April or early May. The park also features walking paths, fountains, and a gazebo.

Helen Plum Memorial Library

The Helen Plum Memorial Library is Lombard's public library. Originally founded in 1909, the current building opened in 2002. The library features books, computers, meeting spaces, and programs for all ages.

Historical Museum

The Lombard Historical Museum is located in the former Illinois Bell Telephone building built in 1927. It features exhibits on the history of Lombard and hosts special events throughout the year.
