Lockport is a city located in Will County, Illinois, about 30 miles southwest of Chicago. According to the Wikipedia page on Lockport, the city had a population of 24,839 as of the 2010 census, making it the 53rd largest city in Illinois. The city was founded in 1853 and was named after nearby canal locks on the Illinois and Michigan Canal.

History

The Illinois and Michigan Canal played a key role in Lockport's early development. Construction on the canal began in 1836, facilitated by a land grant. The canal allowed ships to travel from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River, passing through Lockport's locks. The canal contributed to Lockport's growth, as hotels, stores, and taverns sprang up to serve travelers passing through. Lockport was officially incorporated as a town in 1853 and as a city in 1891.

According to the City of Lockport's website, the city's population grew from 15,434 in 2000 to 24,839 in 2010, representing a 61% increase. The city's population was estimated at 25,114 in 2018. Lockport is now the second largest city in Will County behind Joliet.

Attractions and Landmarks

Illinois and Michigan Canal Locks

One of Lockport's most famous attractions is the Illinois and Michigan Canal Locks. This National Historic Landmark includes remains of the original locks built along the canal. The locks allowed boats to navigate past the 30-foot change in elevation between Lake Michigan and the Chicago River.
