History

Lisle was incorporated as a village in 1956. However, the history of settlement in Lisle dates back much further. In the early 1830s, brothers James C. Hatch and Luther A. Hatch bought land near the DuPage River to establish a commission house. Other families soon followed, giving the settlement its original name "DuPage" after the river. The area grew with the opening of the Illinois and Michigan Canal in 1848. In 1859, DuPage was renamed "Lisle" after founder James C. Hatch's ancestral hometown of Lisle, New York.
