Harlem is a village located in Winnebago County in the state of Illinois. According to the Wikipedia page for Harlem, the village had a population of 3,810 as of the 2020 census.

History

Harlem was originally called Celeryville due to the bountiful celery crop grown in the area in the late 1800s. The first settler in Harlem was Henry Thurston who built a log cabin in the area in 1835. In the 1850s, the Galena and Chicago Union Railroad was built through Harlem which brought more settlers and businesses to the area. In 1871, the name of the village was changed to Harlem which likely refers to New Harlem, New York.
