Elk Grove Village is a village located in Cook County, Illinois. As of the 2020 census, the population was 33,047 making it one of the largest suburbs of Chicago. Elk Grove Village has a rich history dating back to the 1830s when the first settlers arrived in the area.

History of Elk Grove Village

Elk Grove Village has its roots in early 19th century homesteaders. One of the first permanent settlers was Dexter Stanley who built a log cabin in the area in 1833. The village itself was founded in 1850 by German immigrant Fredrick Nerge. He built a tavern and general store at the northwest corner of Arlington Heights and Higgins Roads and named it "Elk Grove" after the elk that once roamed the grove.
