History of Elk Grove

The Village of Elk Grove was incorporated in 1956. However, the history of the area goes back much further. In the 1830s, settlers began moving to the rich prairie land outside of Chicago which would later become Elk Grove Township. One of the first settlers was Dexter Graves who built a tavern in 1834 near what is now the intersection of Arlington Heights Road and Rohlwing Road. This tavern served travellers headed to and from Chicago. In 1850, the town was officially established with a post office and named Brush Hill after the surrounding groves and thickets.

By the 1870s, groups of elm, oak and maple trees reminiscent of elk antlers covered the area inspiring a name change to Elk Grove. The Chicago and North Western Railway was extended to Elk Grove in 1855. This improved transportation brought more settlers to the area. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th century, Elk Grove remained a small rural farming community. After World War II, suburban neighborhoods began to expand outward from Chicago eventually reaching Elk Grove. The population boomed transforming Elk Grove into a commuter suburb. Today, Elk Grove continues to balance its historic roots and natural beauty with steady residential and commercial growth.
