History

Elgin was first settled in the 1830s. James T. Gifford and his brother Hezekiah Gifford settled at what is now the intersection of Chicago Street and Gifford Road. Elgin was officially incorporated as a city in 1854 after being named by Hezekiah Gifford after the Scottish tune "Elgin".

Elgin quickly became an important industrial center and was known for watchmaking and dairy production. The Elgin Watch Company was founded in 1864 and became the largest producer of watches in the United States. The watch factory ceased operations in 1964, but watchmaking left a lasting influence on the city.

In the early 20th century, Elgin became well known for its dairy production and was nicknamed "Butter Capital of the World". The Borden dairy plant, located along the Fox River, was one of the largest creameries in the Midwest.

Elgin grew rapidly in the 1950s and 1960s and built a civic center in the heart of downtown, including the 12,000 seat Hemmens Cultural Center which opened in 1981. The city expanded its park and recreational programs during this time as well.

Today, Elgin retains a vibrant downtown centered around the Fox River. The city's rich history can be explored at the Elgin Area Historical Museum.
