Champaign is a city in Champaign County, Illinois with a population of 87,432 as of the 2020 census. It is part of the Champaign–Urbana metropolitan area which has a combined population of over 230,000. Champaign is notable for being home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a world-renowned public research university.

History

The Champaign area was first settled in the early 1800s. The city was officially incorporated in 1860 and named after Champaign County. Growth was spurred by the arrival of the railroad in the 1850s and the establishment of the University of Illinois in 1867. Over the years, Champaign transformed from a small agricultural town into a diversified city with thriving commercial, industrial, and academic sectors.

Geography and Population

Champaign is located in east-central Illinois at the intersection of Interstate 57, Interstate 72, and U.S. Route 45. It is about 135 miles south of Chicago and 125 miles northeast of St. Louis. The city has a total area of 22.46 square miles.

As of the 2020 census, Champaign had a population of 87,432 making it the tenth largest city in Illinois. The racial makeup of the city was 67.8% White, 15.4% African American, 0.3% Native American, 10.9% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanics and Latinos of any race made up 6.9% of the population.

Government

Champaign has a council-manager form of government. The City Council consists of the mayor and ten council members elected from five districts. The City Council appoints a professional city manager to serve as the chief administrative officer. The current mayor of Champaign is Deborah Frank Feinen.
