Capital, Illinois is a village located in Sangamon County. As of the 2010 census, the village had a population of 2,170 people. Capital was established in 1837 and was named after Springfield, which was designated as the new state capital the same year.

In 1990, the population was recorded as 1,695. By 2000, it had grown to 2,025 residents. The latest 2010 census showed further growth to 2,170 people living in Capital.

Capital is located in Sangamon County. As of the 2010 census, Sangamon County had a population of 197,465 residents, making it the 6th most populous county in Illinois.

History

Capital was originally called McKinley after President William McKinley. It was founded in 1837, the same year Springfield became the official state capital of Illinois. The village was renamed Capital in 1939.
