Belleville is a city located in St. Clair County, Illinois, United States. With a population of 44,478 as of the 2010 census, it is the eighth-most populated city in the state outside the Chicago Metropolitan Area.

Belleville is the seat of St. Clair County and the self-proclaimed "Bratwurst Capital of the World." It is located along the Mississippi River approximately 15 miles southeast of downtown St. Louis. Named after early American settler George Blair, Belleville was founded in 1814.

History

The first European settlement in Belleville was made by French colonists in the late 1700s. After the American Revolutionary War, American veterans received land grants in the Belleville area. Many French colonists moved west across the river to Missouri.

George Blair founded the city in 1814, naming it after his friend Rev. John Smith's hometown of Belleville, Virginia. Blair donated land and funds to establish Belleville Academy, the first primary school in the city. It opened in 1819. The first railroad line was completed in 1853, connecting Belleville to the nearby city of Illinoistown. Immigrants from Germany and Ireland came to the area to work on the railroad.

By 1870, Belleville had grown to a population of 8,000, and was established as an important service and manufacturing center. Many businesses flourished, especially breweries producing beer. Brick companies also thrived due to the nearby large clay deposits. The city continued to grow steadily into the early 1900s.
