Nestled in the heart of Fulton County, Avon, Illinois is a charming rural city with deep roots in American history. Though a small community of just over 700 residents, Avon packs plenty of midwestern hospitality and appeal into its 2.11 square miles.

History

Avon was officially incorporated as a village in 1867. However, its history dates back much further. Archeological evidence indicates Native American tribes occupied the land as early as 300 BC. Avon was primarily inhabited by the Potawatomi and Illiniwek tribes.

The first pioneers of European descent arrived between 1828 and 1830. Most were farmers looking to cultivate the rich prairie soil. Agriculture remains vital to Avon's economy today.

As Avon's population grew in the mid-1800s, amenities like stores, schools, churches, and a post office were established. The City of Avon government was formalized in 1867.

One of Avon's claims to fame is a visit by Abraham Lincoln in 1858 during his Senate campaign. The future president gave a rousing speech at Avon City Park during his travels. A commemorative plaque marks the occasion today.

Attractions and Landmarks

Though a small town, Avon offers a few attractions for visitors to enjoy. Nature lovers will relish the hiking and biking trails at Avon-Bardolph Riverside Park. This scenic park along the banks of the Spoon River provides opportunities to fish, camp, and picnic.

For indoor fun, stop by the Fulton County Fairgrounds at 1511 West Washington Street. Throughout the year, this venue hosts events like auto shows, craft fairs, truck and tractor pulls, and of course, the annual Fulton County Fair.
