Population

The town has grown steadily since its early days as a farming community in the 1830s and 1840s, with significant population spurts in the 1950s-1970s. While growth has stabilized in recent decades, Arlington Heights continues to be an attractive suburban destination for families and professionals.

History

The history of Arlington Heights dates back to the 1830s, when German immigrant Fredrick Benedict anchored the fledgling community with a tavern he built at a rural crossroads. The town was incorporated in 1887 as Dunton, after founding resident Hiram Dunton. It was renamed Arlington Heights in 1923.

Arlington Heights grew significantly after World War II, nearly doubling in population between 1950-1960. The postwar boom brought rapid suburban residential development, with new housing spreading outward from the historic downtown core. Major local employers and shopping destinations established themselves during this period of growth, shaping Arlington Heights into the bustling, middle-class community it remains today.
