History

The Coeur d'Alene people, a tribe of Native Americans, have lived in this area for thousands of years. The tribe was initially encountered in 1806 by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Fur trading brought white settlers to the region in the early 1800s and missionaries arrived in the 1830s.

A mission called Mission of the Sacred Heart was established in 1853 by Roman Catholic priests and the town that grew around it became known as Coeur d’Alene. The city was officially incorporated in 1887. The Coeur d’Alene people were confined to a reservation in 1887 but the city retained the name Coeur d’Alene.
