Valrico is a census-designated place in Hillsborough County, Florida with a population of around 35,000 residents. Located 18 miles east of Tampa, Valrico provides residents with a small town atmosphere while remaining close to urban amenities.

History

Valrico has a long history dating back to the late 1800s when it was founded as an agricultural community. Some of the first settlers included the Sparkman, Warnken, and Lima families who established homesteads and farms in the area. Valrico was named after the Valrico Mine in Spain which was owned by mining investor Henry Bradley Plant. Plant helped establish the community by bringing the railroad through the town in 1884. This helped the local economy thrive by providing transportation for crops and phosphate. Over the years, Valrico transitioned from an agricultural hub to a commuter town for Tampa.[1]

Demographics and Population

According to the 2020 census, Valrico has a population of 35,865 residents. The racial makeup of the town is 78.5% White, 11.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 3.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.5% from other races, and 3.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino residents of any race make up 18.2% of the population.

Over the last several decades, Valrico has seen steady population growth as new residential communities have developed. The population grew from under 7,000 residents in 1990 to over 35,000 in 2020. Valrico provides an affordable small town lifestyle within commuting distance to jobs in Tampa.[2]

The major highways serving Valrico are I-75, SR 60, and SR 39. I-75 provides access to Tampa and areas north while SR 60 connects to Brandon, Lake Wales, and central Florida.
