History

The Villages area was originally home to indigenous peoples before Spanish and British colonists arrived in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Seminole tribe was the predominant indigenous group by the late 18th century. In the early 19th century, the US acquired Florida from Spain and began clearing Seminoles from the area to make way for settlers. Some Seminoles resisted, leading to the Second Seminole War from 1835-1842.

After the war, the area was mostly uninhabited wetlands and wilderness until the late 20th century. In the 1960s, Harold Schwartz purchased large tracts of land in Sumter and Marion counties and began plans to develop a retirement community called The Villages. The first Villages homes were built in the 1980s. The community grew rapidly through the 1990s and 2000s as more homes and amenities were constructed.

Today, The Villages spans three counties, has over 150,000 residents, dozens of recreation centers, three downtown areas, and over 50 golf courses. It has one of the highest populations of senior citizens in the US and has become Florida's fastest growing community.
