History

Sanford was founded in 1870 and was named after C.C. Sanford, who was a civil engineer instrumental in the area's growth. Henry S. Sanford, C.C.'s father, led a group of businessmen to purchase 12.5 acres of land along Lake Monroe to establish a town. This land purchase led to the founding of Sanford.

In 1877, Sanford became connected to the area through steamboats on the St. Johns River. This allowed the city to grow as an important transportation hub. The city was officially incorporated in 1877. After a freeze in 1894-1895 wiped out the orange crop, Sanford's economy shifted towards becoming a commercial and transportation center due to its location near Orlando.
