History

The Panama City area was first settled by the Muskogee Indians. In the early 1800s, the first permanent American settlers arrived to the area, which was then part of Walton County. A trading post called Harrison was established in the 1840s. When nearby St. Andrews was designated county seat, Harrison leaders renamed the town Panama City in 1909 in hopes of impressing railroad officials and getting a terminus station.

The building of the Panama Canal, railroad expansion, logging, and tourism all fueled the city's growth over the early 1900s. During World War II, the military built Panama City's Tyndall Air Force Base, Bay County's first airport, and the Naval Support Activity base. These installations brought thousands of people to the city. Over the decades since, Panama City has continued to grow with the tourism, healthcare, and military industries.
