History

Palm Coast was developed by ITT Community Development Corporation, originally developed to house employees of the ITT Corporation. The first residents moved into their homes in 1971. Through the 1970s and 1980s, Palm Coast grew slowly but steadily. In 1993, ITT Corporation sold the community to Florida Property Associates, L.P. for $93 million. In 1999, Palm Coast was officially incorporated as a city.

As of 2020, the population of Palm Coast was 89,288. This makes it the 16th largest city in Florida. The city has grown rapidly since its incorporation in 1999, when the population was just 32,732. From 2000 to 2010, Palm Coast was the 6th fastest growing city in the United States. The large growth is due to migration, as people are attracted to Palm Coast's low cost of living, beautiful beaches, parks, and golf courses.

Transportation

The main roads through Palm Coast are State Road 100 and Interstate 95. SR 100 runs east-west through the middle of the city. I-95 runs north-south just west of the city center. Other major roads include Palm Coast Parkway and Belle Terre Parkway.

Palm Coast does not currently have public transportation or a bus system. The City Council approved a transit feasibility study in 2021 to evaluate public transportation options for the city.

The Palm Coast International Airport (61 Airport Rd, Palm Coast, FL 32164) serves private aircraft and does not have commercial flights. The closest major airport is Daytona Beach International Airport, about 25 miles south of Palm Coast.

Palm Coast is also accessible by Amtrak via the Palatka station, about 20 miles west of the city.
