Ocoee is a city located in west Orange County, Florida, United States. As of the 2020 US Census, the population was 59,170, making it the third-largest city in Orange County. Ocoee prides itself on its natural beauty and southern small-town charm.

History

Ocoee was founded in the mid-1800s as a settlement located along Starke Lake. The area was inhabited by Native Americans before early settlers arrived in the 1830s. By the late 1800s, Ocoee had become a prosperous farming community filled with citrus groves and cotton fields. On November 2, 1920, a massacre took place in Ocoee when a group of white residents attacked and killed dozens of African Americans after July Perry, an African American man, tried to vote. This tragic event became known as the Ocoee Massacre and devastated the African American community in Ocoee for decades. Today, Ocoee remembers this difficult chapter of its history while looking ahead to a more inclusive future.

Population and Demographics

According to the 2020 US Census, Ocoee had a population of 59,170 residents. The racial makeup of the city was 61.7% White, 13.4% African American, 0.4% Native American, 4.9% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 15.2% from other races, and 4.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino residents of any race made up 29.7% of the population.
