History

Ocala was established in 1846, and the city was named after Ocala in County Galway, Ireland. During the 1840s, Ocala benefited economically due to the Florida railroad connecting it to ports on the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean. By the 1880s, Ocala was known as the "Phosphate City" because the area was a major producer of phosphate fertilizer.
