History of Oakland Park

Oakland Park has a long and storied history dating back to the early 20th century. In 1925, two Florida land developers named J.A. Glass and R.P. Stephenson purchased 4,000 acres of swamp land and citrus groves, dreaming of building a vacation destination. They divided the land into plots and built the first hotel and golf course, naming the area Oakland Park.

During the Florida land boom of the 1920s, Oakland Park grew quickly. When the Great Depression hit, growth stalled but the community continued on. After World War II, the city experienced another population boom as GIs returned and the economy improved.

In 1939, Oakland Park was officially incorporated as a city. It continued to expand over the decades, annexing nearby enclaves and seeing its population rise into the 40,000s by the year 2000.
