North Port is a city located in Sarasota County, Florida. With a population of over 64,000 as of 2017, it is the largest city by area in the county. North Port has experienced rapid growth since becoming incorporated as a city in 1959.

History

The area now known as North Port was originally inhabited by Native Americans thousands of years ago. In the late 19th century, homesteaders settled in the area and engaged in cattle ranching, farming and fishing along the Myakka River. In the 1950s, the Mackle Brothers purchased large tracts of land in the area with the vision to develop an affordable retirement community. This led to the incorporation of North Port in 1959. Early residents were mostly retirees from the Northeast U.S. and Canada. Over the next few decades, North Port grew rapidly into the large residential community it is today.

North Port covers over 99 square miles of land area. It is located along the shores of the Myakka River, which flows into the Gulf Mexico. The city has a humid subtropical climate influenced by the Gulf of Mexico, with hot summers and mild, dry winters.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the population of North Port was estimated to be 64,428 in 2017, making it the 16th largest city in Florida. The city has experienced rapid growth since its early days, more than doubling in population between 1990 and 2010. Today, it is the largest city by area in Sarasota County.
